Home Organization Volunteer Toolkit 2025

ANV Home Organizing Goal Setting Action Plan: this is an online, editable version of the plan on p. 25 of the Toolkit. It can be tailored and updated with individual clients. Please download and save this file for your own use.

Daily Preparation Schedule: People who plan are eight times more likely to do things. And the best way to plan is to use SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound). For someone who struggles to start activities or to complete activities, this kind of “break things down” exercise is ideal. Smaller and more distributed ways and maybe even shorter ways to engage in one activity, divided into smaller activities over various days is best. Memory and learning are enhanced with this bite size approach.

Rebuilding Together of Arlington/Fairfax/Falls Church: Home organizing volunteers who see a need for home modification should be aware of Rebuilding Together’s scope of services. Examples include grab bars, exterior ramps, or when a task is beyond the scope of ANV’s volunteers. (Note that Rebuilding Together serves lower-income clients.)

FURNITURE | Share of McLean: This organization may be a good recipient of ANV members’ surplus furniture and clothes, especially when they don’t want donations to go to Goodwill/Salvation Army. Share’s volunteers may be able to pick up the member’s donation, which is especially handy for larger items like furniture.
