ANV “Annual” Picnic Returns on September 10!
RSVP for the September 10 Picnic now! The “annual” ANV Picnic returns on Saturday, September 10 from 11:30 am -1:30 pm at the Bluemont Picnic Shelter. Members, volunteers, family and friends are welcome. Join ANV to celebrate the end of summer with an outdoor cookout. ANV will provide beverages, hamburgers, veggie burgers, hotdogs and all the fixin’s. You are welcome to make this a pot luck and bring a dish to share. For planning purposes, please RSVP to Office@arlnvil.org or call 703-509-8057 to let us know you plan to attend and how many people will join you. If you plan to bring a side dish, please also tell what you will bring. Details below.

Falls Prevention Expo, September 16
Falls are the #1 reason older adults end up in the ER, but falls are not a normal part of aging and can be prevented. Arlington County 55+ Program, VHC Health, and Northern Virginia Falls Prevention Alliance are hosting a Falls Prevention & Safety Expo on Friday, September 16, 10 AM – 12 PM at Lubber Run Community Center, 300 North Park Drive. The event is free; no registration is required. Details below.
Roosevelt Island Walk, Thursday September 22 at 11:00am
The quarterly walk will be on a weekday this year, Thursday, September 22 and a little later start time at 11:00am. Please see details below.
Hillwood Tour, Friday, September 23 at 10:00am
We have many events in September, including a self-guided tour of the Hillwood Estate and Gardens on Friday, September 23 at 10:00am. If there is sufficient interest, we are also have a lunch reservation at the Merriweather Café at 11:30am. There is a cost for the Tour and Lunch. Details below

Wednesday, September 7: September is National Emergency Preparedness Month! Tania Bougebrayel Cohn from Arlington County’s Department of Public Safety Communications and Emergency Management will join us to talk about Arlington’s emergency preparedness and response capabilities as well as what you should know if a disaster strikes.
Wednesday, September 14: Arlington’s Stormwater Utility Proposal. Did you know that Arlington County is considering changing the way the stormwater management program is funded from a tax based on real estate assessments, to a tax based on the amount of impervious surface area on your property? Aileen Winquist from Arlington’s Stormwater Management Program will join us to discuss the proposal and what it might mean for you.
Wednesday, September 21: What’s New with Park and Recreation and 55+? Think you know all there is to know about Arlington’s Park and Recreation and 55+ programs? Perhaps you’ve even taken a few fitness or art classes through them. But they are so much more than that! Jessica Vasquez will join us to talk about some of their new offerings including a meals program and travel opportunities.
Wednesday, September 28: The C&O Canal National Historical Park. Running from Washington, DC, to Cumberland, MD, the C&O Canal towpath is 184.5 miles long, providing a popular place for people to bike, hike, run, and walk. The park encompasses more than 20,000 acres, includes more than 1,000 historic structures, and is home to 200 rare, threatened, and endangered plants. More than 5 million people visit the park each year, making it the 11th most visited National Park, with more visitors than Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, and Rocky Mountain National Park. Charissa Hipp, from the C&O Canal Trust, will talk about the park’s history and the C&O Canal Trust’s role as the official nonprofit partner to the park.

How to get to Bluemont Picnic Shelter: The easiest way to get to Bluemont Park is to take Route 50 past Carlin Springs Road and turn right at the light at North Manchester Street. Manchester Street will dead-end into the Reeves farmhouse. Turn right into the large parking lot on the right. The picnic shelter and field are located across Four Mile Run stream. You may park your car in the lot and access the shelter via the stone step walkway and bridge. You may also drive on the causeway across the stream to drop off passengers and supplies. Cars should be parked in the parking lot. Bathrooms are available next to the parking lot. The park is alcohol-free.
Roosevelt Island Walk, Thursday September 22 at 11:00am
The quarterly walk will be on a weekday this year, Thursday, September 22 (the actual Autumn Equinox) and a little later start time at 11:00am. Join your fellow ANV-ers on the next seasonal walk at Theodore Roosevelt Island. Each one is a happening—we never know exactly who’s going to show up, but it’s always good. Family and friends are welcome to join us. Remember that auto access to the Roosevelt Island parking lot is only from the northbound George Washington Parkway. Alternatively, there’s paid parking in Rosslyn, and the island is about a 15-minute walk from the Rosslyn Metro and bus stops. Please meet at landward end of the footbridge to the island at 11:00am. Hillwood Tour, Friday, September 23 at 10:00am
Join us at the Hillwood Estate and Gardens on Friday, September 23 at 10:00am for a tour of the special exhibit, Grace of Monaco: Princess in Dior. We will take a self-guided tour of this exhibit, plus have the added opportunity to see the Gardens, mansion and greenhouse. The cost of admission to the Estate is $12.00.
In addition to the Tour, we have a lunch reservation at 11:30am in the Merriweather Café if we have 10 or more people sign up for lunch. Hillwood requires that we pre-order lunch from the group dining menu. The lunch is a buffet of assorted sandwiches, etc. The lunch cost is $24.50, tax and tip included.
Reservations are required. RSVP by noon September 14 to the Office@arlnvil.org or call 703-509-8057. Please indicate if you plan on attending the Lunch in addition to the Tour. Once you sign up by September 14, you are liable for your costs since ANV has to pre-pay on September 14. You will be asked to bring your money or a check to the event on September 23. Cost of the Tour is $12.00; if you attend the lunch, it is an additional $24.50 for a total of $36.50.

Tai Chi: Tuesdays at 9:30 am
ANV Tai Chi is meeting outdoors with the warmer weather, or if inclement weather indoors at Saint George’s Episcopal Church in Virginia Square. Outdoors will be at the Maury Park East space on Wilson Blvd. between the vape shop and the Arlington Arts Center, 3550 Wilson Blvd. Those who drive may park in the Arlington Arts Center lot towards the rear. If you are interested in joining this practice (not instruction), please contact Anita Wallgren at awallgren@gmail.com or (202) 674-5553 to get weekly emails with the plan for the week.
Bocce: Mondays at 6:00pm
Join weekly Bocce on Monday afternoons at 6:00 pm (note new time); games last approximately one hour. In addition to the two sets of bocce balls, we now have two new sets of boules. Bocce is played every Monday at the courts on the corner of Randolph St. & N. Glebe Rd. Parking is available in the Ballston Quarter parking garage for $1. ANV Board Games Day, Thursday, September 8 at 2pm
Do you like board games? Join ANV members and volunteers for Games Day at Ballston Quarter Food Hall (lower level). Look for players at the tables near the elevators. Play games like Scrabble, Mexican Train Dominoes, Cribbage, Ticket to Ride, Qwirkle, and more. We play every other Thursday at 2pm. Parking is available in the Ballston Quarter parking garage for $1.
Happy Hour: Thursdays, 5–7 pm
Join the ANV Happy Hour Group. The Happy Hour Group will try locations in the Ballston area. Mike will add you to his email list and let you know the weekly location on Thursday morning.

Men’s Lunch Bunch, September 9 at noon
The Men’s Lunch Bunch will get together on Friday, September 9 at noon at the Silver Diner located in Clarendon at 3200 Wilson Boulevard. Come bid the Silver Diner good-bye before it moves to its new location in Ballston. The Silver Diner offers American classics including healthy options to suit today’s lifestyles. Encore Learning Preview, September 1 at 10:00am
Encore offers four to eight week Zoom and in-person classes this fall in the areas of social sciences, music, literature & writing, theater, health & wellness, law, politics & public affairs, fine arts, history and science & technology. Virtual Center for Active Adults (VCAA), through October 2022 (NEW!)
Arlington County is partnering with Fairfax City, Fairfax County, Prince William County and the Town of Vienna to host live virtual programming on Zoom five days a week, including fitness classes, special presentations and interactive games. Falls Prevention & Safety Expo, Friday September 16

Learn from experts throughout the community about fall risks and fall prevention strategies. Arlington County 55+ Program, VHC Health, and Northern Virginia Falls Prevention Alliance are hosting a Falls Prevention & Safety Expo on Friday, September 16, 10 AM – 12 PM at Lubber Run Community Center, 300 North Park Drive. The event is free; no registration is required. Stop by anytime during the scheduled event.
Informational booths, activities and screenings will be available and include fall risk assessment, balance and strength exercises, medication review with a pharmacist, home modification techniques, blood pressure and vision screening, along with general safety tips to protect yourself and your home.
Falls Prevention Classes
Matter of Balance, Virtual class
The Northern Virginial Falls Prevention Alliance is offering a FREE virtual Matter of Balance workshop that will begin on September 20, during Falls Prevention Awareness week. A Matter of Balance is an 8-week, 2-hour class which is an evidence based cognitive restructuring program. The program will focus on how we view falling, our fears of falling, strategies for preventing a fall and participation in gentle exercises.
This is open to all older adults in our region. It will run on Tuesdays, 10 a.m. – 12 noon. Space is limited. Registration required.
SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life)
In September from the 55+ Program: SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life). This class is specifically designed to improve your balance and mobility. SAIL is an evidence-based class that meets one-hour 2 times a week, and includes Aerobic Exercises, Strengthening Exercises, Balance Exercises, and Stretching Exercises. The class addresses all the systems required to maintain your balance. The class can be done standing or seated. See page 10 of the 55+ Fall Guide for classes at Lubber Run or Aurora Hills.

Aging Matters Radio and TV
Aging Matters (www.agingmattersonline.com) radio is a weekly program on Arlington’s community radio station WERA Arlington 96.7 FM. Every Tuesday at 2 pm and Friday at 4 pm, host Cheryl Beversdorf interviews experts on topics impacting the lives of older adults and their families. Aging Matters TV offers interviews with aging experts plus demonstrations of aging related subjects.
