Wednesday, June 10: How to Achieve a Good Death. Author and end-of-life activist Chris Palmer explains how to achieve a peaceful and dignified death. Bloomsbury published his latest book, Achieving a Good Death: A Practical Guide to the End of Life, in October 2024. There is an art to dying well that can be taught and learned. While death is inevitable, dying badly is not. Chris will help to reduce the fear that often cloaks discussions about death and dying and give the audience some of the knowledge and skills needed to achieve a gentle death free of regrets. He will discuss living well to die well, death cleaning, advance directives, dementia riders, ethical wills, hospice, end-of-life doulas, end-of-life options, body disposition, funeral planning, and other topics. Wednesday, June 24: Move Better. Recover Smarter. Live Fully: Physical Therapy and Hip/Knee Rehab. What do you really need to know about hip and knee surgery: When is it necessary? What should you expect before surgery? What happens when you leave the operating room? And most importantly, how does physical therapy improve recovery and improve outcomes? Dr. Andrew Shipp, with PT Solutions Physical Therapy, will cover the importance of PT before surgery, what recovery actually looks like, whether PT alone may be an option, and how to advocate for yourself as a patient.

Seasonal Walk, Thursday June 11 at 11:00am (NEW DATE)
ANV’s seasonal strolls are a good way to enjoy nature in company with neighbors, family, and friends. The next stroll will be on Thursday, June 11, at 11:00am at Carlin Springs Park in South Arlington. We are taking a brief vacation from our usual walks at Teddy Roosevelt Island due to expected traffic delays there while the nearby highway bridge is being repaired. Our meeting place is at the Long Branch Nature Center, which shares a road entry with the Northern Virginia Medical Center at 611 South Carlin Springs Road. Long Branch stream flows through the woods, past two ponds full of frogs and turtles. Long Branch’s wooded stream valley is home to a diverse population of wildlife including raccoons, foxes, flying squirrels, salamanders and more. The Nature Center itself boasts an ornamental garden, as well as indoor interpretive exhibits, including reptile and amphibian terrariums. This is a rain-or-shine event–there is no rain date. Point of Contact: Allan Williams at allanwilliams@anvarlington.org
ANV’s Annual Picnic, Saturday, June 20
ANV’s annual lunch picnic is Saturday, June 20 at the Bluemont Picnic Shelter from 11:30am – 1:30pm. The Picnic Shelter is a short walk from the end of North Manchester Street where it meets 4th Street North and adjacent to the Reeves farmhouse. Members, volunteers, family and friends are welcome. Join us to celebrate the beginning of summer with an outdoor cookout. ANV will provide beverages, hamburgers, veggie burgers, hotdogs and all the fixin’s. You are welcome to make this a pot luck and bring a dish to share. For planning purposes, please RSVP to Office@ANVarlington.org or call 703-509-8057 to let us know if you plan to attend and how many people will join you. If you plan to bring a side dish, please also tell what you will bring.
How to get to Bluemont Picnic Shelter:
By car: The easiest way to get to Bluemont Park when driving is to take Route 50 heading West past Carlin Springs Road and turn right at the light at North Manchester Street. Manchester Street will dead-end into the Reeves farmhouse. Turn right into the large parking lot on the right. The picnic shelter and field are located across Four Mile Run stream. You may park your car in the lot and access the shelter via the stone step walkway and bridge. You may also drive on the causeway across the stream to drop off passengers and supplies. Cars should be parked in the parking lot.
By bus: Metrobus 25B Mark Center via Southern Towers is one option; this bus departs from Ballston Station and stops at the intersection of N. Carlin Springs Rd/N Kensington St, which is about 200 feet (on a nature trail) from the picnic shelter.
If you are an ANV Full Member, you are also welcome to request ANV Transportation. The park is alcohol-free. Bathrooms are available next to the parking lot.

Is “Dead Butt Syndrome” A Real Thing?
By Joan M Smith
Recently I keep seeing references to “dead butt syndrome,” and my curiosity drove me to research this for veracity. And to my surprise, I found that it is not only real, but super important for all of us to recognize.
The Healthline online newsletter defines this syndrome, or DBS, clinically known as “gluteal amnesia” or “gluteus medius tendinopathy,” as symptoms where you develop a condition where your glute muscles “forget” how to fire and thus stabilize the pelvis to keep the body in proper alignment. This is usually due to prolonged sitting and inactivity. Think of your “butt” or sit muscles (gluteal muscles) after an hour sitting at your computer, and you get the idea—numb rear, sore, perhaps tingling. Problem is, this muscle group can trigger lower back pain, hip and knee pain, as well as outer thigh pain.
So, how does this happen? Lengthy sitting is a primary cause, but also slouching, and general inactivity, even if you exercise at other times! With prolonged sitting the gluteal muscles tend to lengthen, and the hip muscles tighten. The hip muscles run from the lower back, through the pelvis and across the front of the thigh; they are responsible for moving your legs to walk, run, stand from sitting, and climb stairs.
The Cleveland Clinic online newsletter admonishes us to “Save Your Buns!”, and their Dr. Andrew Bang, a chiropractor, channels Richard Simons (remember him?) who always instructed TV viewers to “squeeze your buns”. Many of you women may have learned Kegel exercises for vaginal childbirth recovery, as well as for bladder leakage problems, and men may have learned the “bun squeeze” for strength and stability while working out in the gym.
The New York Times in 2025 referred to “sitting is the new smoking” catch phrase, citing research that ties lengthy sitting to higher risks for chronic diseases (yep, again, heart disease and diabetes). A common suggestion for when lengthy computer work is required, is to use an adjustable computer desk, and alternate sitting and standing.
In the March 3, 2026 issue of The New York Times, a headline claimed “This muscle is the unsung hero of longevity”, and that “building your butt muscles will help you stay injury-free and independent” (Hilary Achauer). Ms. Achauer reminds us of the 1980’s workout titled “Buns of Steel”, and that a “powerful posterior isn’t just about looking good in jeans”. She points out that glutes can help reduce the risk of falling, which is a priority to aging well! She suggests exercises such as monster walks, donkey kickbacks, and using the hip abduction machine (pushing out) at the gym.
What to do to prevent DBS? Well, engaging your gluteal muscles frequently throughout the day is key! This may involve standing up and walking around your desk every 30 minutes or so, doing lunges (hold for 2 minutes if you can), stretching, or squats. If you are physically able, doing yoga “bridges”, standing on one leg (while firming the other glute), and side leg raises (while standing on other leg, holding onto a chair or table) for several repetitions, and again, doing these throughout the day. Don’t exercise aggressively for one hour and expect that will hold you for the rest of the day! “Frequent” is the important word here.
And, don’t overlook posture. Correcting posture as you stand, sit, and walk helps to more evenly distribute your body weight, and makes it easier to engage the glutes. After all, we all want to be as stable as pedestrians as we can, for as long as we can.
Occasional Diary from the Independent Living Village:
To piggyback on today’s above topic, I want to share that I do water aerobics and yoga classes here through the local fitness program. Uncanny how many times during both types of exercise we are instructed to “engage the navel” (your core), and “tighten the glutes”. Almost every movement that addresses lower body and legs involves this motion. Now I understand how very important this movement is! And since I know I can do this even while sitting (say, in a car, when you cannot stand up), brushing my teeth (while on one leg), and set phone reminders to get up for breaks when watching TV, I am doing it more than ever. No DBS for me!
